I don’t know about you, but once Christmas is over, I often struggle to decorate my home. The days are short, dark, and rather blah. Trees and plants are mostly dormant, and there just isn’t much color outside. I’m also not a fan a ‘forced’ winter decor…no throw pillows that say “Cozy” for me! Decorating for winter doesn’t have to mean buying new things either – didn’t we do enough of that over the holidays??? Here are some simple(and frugal) ways you can spruce up your home this season:
Bring In Plants
I don’t have a greenhouse, so each winter I must bring all of my tender potted plants indoors. This gives me the opportunity to add color, texture and freshness to my home in the depths of winter. So rather than being inconvenienced by the jungle around me, I use the greenery as a jumping off point in my winter decorating.
I also love clipping branches and putting them in vases around my home. They add a lovely foil to the lushness of green plants and give great architectural balance to arrangements.
Luckily, there ARE flowers that bloom now, making decorating for winter even easier. Hellebores are my absolute favorite and make such beautiful centerpieces. I clipped fern fronds and purple heart to make a sweet little arrangement. And yes, I added a branch for structure and support too!
Look for Pansies, Violas, and Cyclamen at garden centers now. Simply popping them into a pretty bowl or vase instantly adds beauty.
Add Color To Your Winter Decorating
Perhaps the fastest way to perk up your winter decor is to add a punch of color. During these dreary days pinks and purples tend to make me happiest. This year I purchased these pillow covers to coordinate with my mauve and cranberry Christmas tree.
Even after Christmas, you can still use some ‘Christmassey’ things throughout the winter. This gold laurel garland adds shimmer and texture to my ginger jar arrangement and emphasises the bold blue and white.
Let There Be Light
Perhaps the most impactful thing you can do when decorating for winter is to layer your home’s light. Not only will it add warmth and coziness, it will also banish those winter blahs. Battery operated or plug in sconces are a fantastic way to brighten your walls. Candles and touch lamps are fantastic options too!
Be Cozy
Decorating for winter shouldn’t be a big production. In fact, you can probably do at least two of these suggestions right now! The important thing is to add warmth, cheer, and COZY to your home this season. So let’s savor these days, because there’s always beauty to be found. Happy Nesting!
