Ah, kitchen decor. Some people love it, some hate it. I’m not one to do much decorating in the kitchen, mainly because I cook…alot. But there are a couple of spots that some practical decorating makes sense. Mainly, right next to the stove, and my coffee bar area.
While adding some fall touches to the rest of the house, I stumbled upon these beautiful vintage glass dishes in my stash. I knew they’d work perfectly in the kichen as practical storage for salt and garlic. That got my wheels turning, and I decided to find a way to make some pretty AND practical fall kitchen decor. So, I went through all my cabinets and pulled out as many special pieces as I could. I mainly focused on family heirlooms handed down to me. The result was a total flop…NOT practical at all for my space. Just fussy. Note to self: you don’t have to use EVERYTHING you own all at once. Ha! Even though I love my Grandmother’s soup tureen repurposed as a fruit basket, it doesn’t need to be included in the vignette. Same for the silverware box…lovely, but just too much. See?

It was definitely giving fall vibes, but also making me anxious. So I scrapped everything and started over.
Repurposed Silver Chafing Dish Organizer
The silver chafing dish was a wedding present, and I’m ashamed to say I’ve never used it as such. I repurposed it into a caddy to hold frequently used kitchen things. I’ll have to share a how-to soon. It works perfectly to corral my salt cellar, grinders, toothpicks, etc. If you don’t have one, they’re easily found at antique stores or even on Etsy.

Toothpicks for baking are in a vintage silverplate sherry glass. And no, I don’t bother polishing anything. I sort of like the patina.

Fall Kitchen Decor Using Family Recipes
My family is full of great cooks, so I found some old recipe cards and framed them. I chose a few comfort classics as well as some more exotic recipes (roasted antelope, anyone??). I love that they are hand written by special ladies in my family.

Artwork on the kitchen counter might not be the most practical thing to do, but I love how it adds layers to the vignette. Much better than simply propping up a boring old cutting board! Plus, it gives your kitchen decor some character and meaning.
The sweet little oil painting was done by a lady in my hometown. I love the pop of color it adds.

Lamps: Kitchen Decor That’s Pretty AND Practical
I do love cordless lamps, and they are so handy to have in the kitchen. I actually have two. One by the stove and one at my coffee station. They add the perfect amount of ambient light for those late-night snack runs or early morning coffee pours.

Creative Utensil Holders
Rather than use a typical utensil crock, I decided to display these beautiful French steaknives in a brass pitcher. I love the warmth the brass adds to all the silver around it. Mixed metals are perfect in your fall kitchen decor. They keep your vignette interesting and add depth.

Fall Kitchen Decor: Yea or Nay?
After living with this vignette for a while, I have to say that I’ve really enjoyed the charm this little spot has. I’d much rather grab my garlic from a pretty candy dish than the mesh sleeve from the store. I love how the chafing dish keeps everything together and off the counter. Visually, that makes it look tidier to me. So, will you be adding some fall decor into your kitchen this season? Happy Nesting!
