The shifting of the seasons always has me thinking of ways to freshen up my decor and change the feel of my home. However, I don’t necessarily want to go out and buy more stuff, you know? Most of us have plenty of decor, especially if we think outside the box and repurpose it. To that end, here are some budget-friendly ways you can create a cozy home…without spending any money.

1. Ambient Lighting

Lighting is one of the biggest influences on how a room feels, and it’s also one of the easiest things to change. I change my lightbulbs out twice a year – soft, warm light in the fall/winter, and bright, clear light in the spring/summer. This changes the whole feel of a room and really affects your mood.

In our kitchen we recentely replaced our bulky can lights with these sleek recessed wafer lights. I love that you can adjust the light temperature with a touch of the dial. They were super easy to install(I did it myself), and when my husband saw them, he said, “Whoa, it looks like Williams Sonoma in here.”. I’ll take it!

Lamps are one of the best accessories to make your home feel cozy. To make them easier to use, I’ve put all of mine on a remote light switch, so I can turn all of them on with the click of a button.

Don’t forget about outdoor lighting! Battery operated candles are an easy way to add an ambient glow to your outdoor areas.

2. Flowers and Branches (or even produce!)

To instantly elevate your home without spending money, look no further than fresh flowers or cut branches. I almost always have some sort of flower arrangement or interesting branch in my home. I just love the simple elegance of fresh wildflowers, or the architectural interest that a cut branch adds.

Don’t think you need to buy a fresh flowers every week(though that is a lovely practice). A bouquet of fresh herbs in your kitchen is a wonderful touch that adds a beautiful scent to your workspace. Even your weekly produce can be a beautiful centerpiece! Arrange fruits and vegetables in a soup tureen, serving bowl, or pretty platter to instantly add some beauty to your countertop or dining table.

Go outside and collect interesting seed pods, vines, branches, etc and add them to a table – so easy! I made faux trees for my front porch recently, and had a small casualty that I brought in and dropped in a vase. Simple yet impactful!

3. Repurpose Common Household Items

If you take a look around your home, I’ll bet you can find some things that could be used in another way. Recently, I took a silver casserole chaffing dish and added bottom to it so I could corral my salt and pepper shakers by the stove. It was such a simple thing, but adds so much charm to my cooking space.

4. Use Real Dishes

One of the easiest ways to make your home feel cozy is to use real dishes when you eat. A delicious meal makes a home smell so good, so why not slow down and enjoy it? Set the table for dinner – even if it’s a simple sandwich. Light a few candles and enjoy your meal. It’s such a simple act, and it doesn’t cost anything!

5. Create Cozy Zones

I’m a big believer in living in your whole home, and one of the ways I do that is by creating cozy zones throughout. My husband calls them “keister resting spots” haha! Add a comfy chair with a lamp, table, and blaket to a corner and you have a cozy zone. Easy!

A porch swing with pillows is a cozy zone. A small cafe table on the patio is a cozy zone. You get the idea. Think about what you would need to relax in a small corner and add it. I keep a basket of magazines next to a corner chair for easy perusing.

One of my favorite weekend rituals is coffee in bed. I love to lounge and sip to ease into the day. However, my husband doesn’t like being in bed so long, so he added a chair to my side of the bed so he can sit to chat. It’s such a simple thing, yet it makes our room so much cozier – all without spending a dime.

6. Move Furniture

Sometimes, you just need a big change to help make your home feel cozier. The cheapest way to do this is by simply rearranging your furniture. When we first moved into our home, I placed our bed between the two windows in the bedroom. It looked okay there, but we had alot of wasted space because of it. On a whim, I decided to move the bed to the far end of the room. PRESTO! We felt like we had a brand new space. Shop your home and figure out what furniture can be moved to other rooms. You’d be surprised at what a change it can make.

My great-grandparent’s buffet has lived in our dining room(the obvious choice), foyer, and living room. Don’t be afraid to repurpose pieces to make them suit your needs(See Tip #3).

7. Declutter

Okay, so this isn’t the most fun to do, but boy, does it give alot of satisfaction! Cozy homes don’t have tons of mess. Now, I’m definitely no minimalist, but a line has to be drawn. It’s really hard to relax in a home that’s full of mail, school paperwork, crafting supplies gone wild, and endless toy clutter. Think about what you have and make sure you love it. There’s no point in keeping pieces that don’t bring you joy. Organize weekly ‘eyesores’ like bills and school forms so they don’t create tension in your home.

Baskets are an attractive way to keep clutter in check. Add them to your stairs, living room, pantry, laundry room, and kitchen for quick decluttering. I keep my potatoes in a basket under my butcher block – convenient and cute storage.

8. Add Photos

A warm and cozy home reflects the people that live in it. Add family photos throughout your home for constant reminders of those you love most. Photos can act as conversation starters for guests or serve as small, quiet reflections of the past. Framed photos on end tables are a beautiful way to add character to your decor, but if you have lots of photos, consider creating a gallery wall with them.

9. Display Keepsakes and Family Heirlooms

Similar to family photos, keepsakes add such a cozy feeling to your home. Trip momentos, collections, and heirlooms are all wonderful things to display. By surrounding yourself with good memories, a house suddenly will feel like a home. Pull out pieces you’ve inherited. Group them with some of your special pieces and display them on a table. You’ll have a one-of-a-kind display that actually means something – a rarity in today’s consumer-driven world.

10. Practice Hospitality and Gratitude

Cozy homes are full of life. People coming and going. Resting, recharging, living. Don’t be afraid to open your home to people. You don’t need to be Martha Stewart to have people over. And yes, I’m talking to myself here too. Hosting doesn’t have to be a big production. Just a cup of coffee and a visit. Letting your kids have friends over to hang out. S’mores by the firepit. Hotdogs on the grill. Simple things. It takes courage to let people in. But it also takes practice, something I’m working on. Remember, perfection is uncomfortable to visitors, so don’t stress about the small things. Nobody wants to sit and chat in a museum, so embrace the messiness of life and open your doors to others – you’ll be glad you did.

What Is A Cozy Home To You?

A cozy home looks different for everybody, but I think the most important thing is making your home a reflection of you. Don’t try to stay on top of decorating trends(hello, all white EVERYTHING!). Make your home match whatever season of life you’re in, and enjoy it. After all, it IS only a season. Happy Nesting!
