I’ve always admired living walls, and have wanted to find a way to incorporate that look into my own home. They add such a lovely organic element to a room, but I wasn’t sold on maintaining live plants on that scale. A slight mishap inspired me to create my own version of the living wall – this simple DIY moss art.
Believe it or not, this art was the result of a broken mirror. A while back, my mom ordered a gorgeous scalloped wall mirror for her dining room. Unfortunately, it arrived smashed to smithereens. The retailer promptly sent a replacement, and told my mom she could just keep or discard the broken mirror. Not knowing quite what to do with it, she asked if I would like it. Much to my husband’s chagrin, I immediately said ‘Yes!’. He’s such a good sport, and is quite used to me bringing random junk home. I immediately knew I would use it to create a moss wall art piece. Here’s how it looked:
Gather Your Supplies
This is a very simple project, and only requires three things: a frame(with backing), moss, and spray adhesive. I also used a wooden paint stir stick to help press the moss down so I wouldn’t get too sticky. After using this method, I think I would also wear a pair of disposable gloves, as it it quite messy.
I used a variety of different types and colors of mosses for this project. Feel free to use whatever combination strikes your fancy.
Creating Your Moss Wall Art
There are two ways to make this moss art, and either is just fine. One, you can lay out all your moss on the frame and arrange it into patterns before gluing, or, two, you can just wing it and glue and stick as you go. I decided I wanted something a bit wild and organic looking, so I chose the latter.
The process is really straightforward. Simply spray your adhesive on the frame backing and place your moss over that spot. Press to make sure as much of it adheres as possible. This is where I used the stir stick. I’d recommend keeping your moss pretty thin, because if it gets too heavy, it will fall off the frame when you hang it. Continue on until you have covered the entire area. I also sprayed adhesive over the top of the whole piece once I was finished, just to ensure the moss stuck together. If your art is going to be hung outside, I’d recommend spraying the finished(dry) piece with a UV protectant to ensure the moss doesn’t fade.
That’s it! Let your moss art dry laying flat for about 24 hours before you hang it. Here’s how mine turned out:
I just love all the texture it adds! The green pops so well against my white brick and creates a lovely focal point to this small wall.
Make It Your Own
This simple moss wall project is such a fun way to incorporate a bit of nature into your decor. Not only does it add vibrant organic texture, each piece will be completely unique. Feel free to tailor this art to your home and personality. The possibilities are endless-include other elements like driftwood, succulents, orchids, or ferns. Happy creating!
