Here in Texas, fall is a very short season and it stays well into the 90’s through October. This means that it’s still too warm for kale, mums, asters, and pansies. To make your home feel like fall, even when it’s still warm outside, try creating faux fall floral arrangements. No, they aren’t as good as the real thing, but they’re still beautiful and fun to make.
Think Outside The Vase
When planning your faux floral arrangement, consider what you will use as your base. This is a perfect opportunity to get creative! Bushel baskets, olive buckets, wash tubs, stumps, and lanterns all make wonderful arrangement vessels.
Pick A Color Palette
Fall arrangements aren’t limited to yellows and oranges. Purples, blues, burgundies, and purples are all beautiful choices. Don’t be afraid to use nontraditional colors in your faux arrangements. Take cues from your home’s color scheme and work from that.
Indoors Or Out?
Where will you be using your fall florals? Consider placing fall arrangements indoors on tables, mantels, sideboards, and bookshelves.
Faux florals are also perfect to use on porches and patios as well. For outdoor arrangements, I recommend spraying them with a UV protectant to keep them from fading.
Choose Your Faux Floral Stems
A stroll down your local craft store aisle will give you loads of options for creating your faux floral arrangement. When deciding what you will use, here are some tips to make an interesting and cohesive arrangement:
Build Your Floral Arrangement
Begin by supporting your arrangement in its vessel. Dry floral foam is an easy and sturdy option. Depending on the type of base you are using, you may need to glue it into the bottom. This is usually the case with shollower bowls, trays, or dishes. For a foam-free option, you can support your floral arrangement with a chicken wire form. Simply bend and shape your wire to fit snugly in your arrangement base.
Once you have a secure base, you can begin inserting your floral stems. Start with your fullest, or largest statement pieces , and add in from there. Spanish moss is an excellent ‘filler’ to conceal any holes or gaps in your arrangement, and also adds wonderful texture.
Add Texture And Height
To give your fall arrangement that extra ‘oomph’, make sure you add lots of good texture. Vary their heights for additional interest. Twigs are my favorite texture to add to large arrangements, and they add the perfect rustic touch for fall florals. Here are some other great textural pieces:
- Antlers
- Seed Pods
- Grasses/Grains
- Driftwood
- Tree Bark
- Tree Branches
- Stones
- Feathers
- Grape Vine
