Ah, fall. My favorite. When temperatures cool down a bit outside and the air smells crisp, I love to throw open the windows to soak in the season. Scent is such an important part of a cozy autumn home, and I love to use natural ingredients to create a welcoming smell. Here is a beautiful fall simmer pot ‘recipe’ to make your home smell amazing.
Fall Simmer Pot Ingredients And Supplies
Feel free to mix, match, and adjust these ingredients to customize the scent to your liking. Savory peppercorns are an unexpected ingredient that I love adding to my fall simmer pot for a spicy note. They add a complexity that keeps the scent from being too sweet.
- Apples
- Oranges
- Whole Cloves
- Cinnamon Sticks
- Rosemary
- Whole Peppercorns – I love this mix
- Small simmer pot or crockpot
- Rolling Pin – to bruise Rosemary
Slice Fruits
The first thing you will need to do is thinly slice your apples and oranges with their skins on. Orange skins contain lots of oils that smell wonderful when heated, so make sure you keep them!
Bruise The Rosemary
In order to release the gorgeous oils from our rosemary stems, you’ll need to bruise them a bit. Simply roll over the stems a few times with a rolling pin. It smells heavenly!
Add Ingredients Into Simmer Pot
Next you’ll add all of your ingredients into the pot. Barely cover with water and set the temperature to low. Make sure your ingredients are always covered with a small amount of water – you don’t want to burn anything!
Once the fall simmer pot is heated, your home will be filled with a gorgeous aroma. I sometimes take the pot off the heat and walk through the house, letting the scent waft through each room.
Storing and Reusing Your Fall Simmer Pot
This simmer pot will keep for a couple of days – just continue adding water. I pop mine in the refrigerator at night so the fruits don’t spoil as fast. For longer use, you can strain off the ingredients(keeping the infused water) and add fresh fruit/herbs/spices. This will create a more potent smell. Do you like creating simmer pots? What are your favorite fall combinations? Happy Nesting!
