Sometimes it’s nice to take a break from over-the-top Christmas decor and embrace simpler, more natural decor. That’s exactly where I found myself last year. After a busy season of decorating, I needed a break. I was tired of glitter and glam and found myself looking for peace and calm. To give you an idea of the amount of glitz I’d been installing, here are some of the ornament strands I made for six trees and five garlands. So.Much.Glitter. Let’s just say I sparkled from head to toe the entire holiday season – ha!

My inspiration for this natural tree decor came from, well, nature! Once the weather got chilly, I had to bring my tender tropical plants indoors. I loved the natural element they brought into my home, and the sense of calm that came with that. I really didn’t want to hide them away, so I set about brainstorming on how I could have a giant Monstera in my living room with a Christmas tree.

Natural Christmas Decor….With An Artificial Tree
We always use an artificial tree. I like the ease of pulling it out of the attic each season and decorating it. No trimming or watering for me! After hanging thousands of ornaments on other people’s trees, I decided to be rebellious and not use any on my own! Even though I try to reuse most of my decorations each year I wanted a tree I could decorate quickly, and with no glitter to clean up afterwards. I did use ribbon and a few picks from previous seasons, so that was a win in my book.

After considering my indoor plants, I made a trip to my local Hobby Lobby to look for inspiration. I made a beeline for the floral department and was inspired by the non Christmas floral picks. That’s right – I bought my Christmas tree decor from the regular floral department. No glitter in sight! They had a great selection of greenery so I scooped up a wide variety of colors, shapes, and textures.
Decorating With Floral Picks
Once home, I set my tree up as usual. I added ribbon that I already owned, and got to work sticking the picks into the Christmas tree. I varied their directions and depth for a full, interesting tree. We laughed at the variety of picks I used – Magnolia, Mesquite, Lamb’s Ear, and Eucalyptus. It was a very confused tree! However, the result was a soothing and aromatic tree(thanks to the dried Eucalyptus).

Adding Live Natural Christmas Decor
Not to fear – I DID use some live greenery in my Christmas decor. In order to balance all the faux floral picks, I decided to make a live greenery garland for my credenza. It was simply a matter of taking a walk with my secateurs and gathering clippings. I used a combination of cedar, holly, boxwood, and arborvitae. Then I simply wired them together, added some fairy lights and leftover picks, and voila! Free natural Christmas decor!

Natural Christmas Decor For A Soothing Look
If you need to simplify your holiday decor this season, skipping the glittery ornaments may be just the ticket. Sure, it’s not typical, but that’s ok. Give yourself grace to create a holiday home that meets your season in life. Take a deep breath, forage some branches, and add natural beauty to your home this Christmas. Happy Nesting!
