I just love changing my home along with the seasons, and I think it’s the perfect way to savor that particular time of year. When it’s time to freshen up my home’s look, I try to take my cues from nature. At the beginning of summer, the light seems a bit softer, and many annuals are just coming into bloom. But once summer is well underway, I like start bringing in bolder colors and textures to mimic the riot of colors outdoors. Here are some of my favorite tropical touches to use in the summer.
Florals/Foliage
One of the quickest ways you can change the look of a room is to bring in plants. Every season I choose plants to complement whatever is happening in nature. Not only is it a wonderful way to live mindfully, but it also breathes fresh life into your home.
Some of my favorite summer plants are:
- Palms
- Ferns
- Orchids
- Monsteras
- Philodendrons
Rattan
Rattan is so versatile, and looks great throughout the year. It’s the quintessential ‘beachy’ material, making it a perfect tropical touch to add in your decorating. Think trunks, baskets, chairs, ottomans, and tables. Here’s an example of a beachy sunroom mood board I created that incorporates plenty of rattan.
Bamboo
Similar to rattan, bamboo is a beautiful tropical material to incorporate into your summer decorating. It lends a wonderful texture that helps create interest without being overpowering. I’m a huge fan of mixing faux and real bamboo throughout my home for for subtle sophistication. Look for bamboo furniture, light fixtures, mirrors, and tableware to add tropical flair to your home this summer.
Shells and Driftwood
Using natural materials is one of my favorite ways to decorate, and in the summer, nothing adds a tropical touch quite like shells and driftwood. When we go to the beach, these are some of our favorite things to look for. Easily add them to your decor on tables, shelves, mantels, or even walls.
