I don’t know about you, but by February, I’m ready for some COLOR around the house. I don’t typically decorate too much for Valentine’s Day, but I do love a pop of pink in late winter. There’s just something cheerful about pinks and reds inside when the landscape outside is dormant. To “perk” things up a bit(ha!), I decided to add some Valentine’s decor to my coffee bar. Because it’s not overtly ‘Valentine-ey’ I’ll keep it up for the rest of the winter too.
Winter Decor That’s Sweet, But Not Too Sweet

Typically, Valentine’s Day decor is loads of hearts and flowers. While I love those just as much as the next gal, I wasn’t feeling that for the kitchen. In my mind, kitchen decor (if there really is such a thing) should be practical above all else. So, for this Valentine’s Day vignette, I dug through cupboards and my china cabinet for pieces that were colorful, sweet AND served a purpose.

Vintage Porcelain Valentine’s Decor

The first thing I chose for my Valentine’s vignette were these sweet demitasse cups from Swinnerton’s. These particular cups belonged to my aunt, and when I was a little girl we would have tea parties with them. They are so tiny that I was able to display them in a footed dessert dome. I’ve had this one for ages, but you could use any sort of cake plate you like.

The pattern is called Swinnerton’s Staffordshire Pink, and you can find it on Ebay and Etsy. If you’re really lucky, you may come across it at an estate sale or thrift store.

Rethink And Repurpose

Over the years I’ve added a cream and sugar to my Swinnerton’s collection. However, I don’t use a creamer on a daily basis, so I added colorful matches to it instead.

To create a backdrop for my Valentine’s decor, I simply tucked rattan chargers (similar) behind my tray for added texture.

For a pop of green, I made a simple topiary using a vintage brass candlestick. Believe it or not, this particular candlestick was a wedding gift to my parents 40+ years ago! You can pick these up for a song at most thrift stores.

Roses Are Red, But So Are Radishes…

If you’ve been around a while, you know that I’m a big proponent of finding beauty in everyday things and using what you have to decorate. Case in point: these radishes. They add a lovely pop of color that plays so well with the china, so why not display them? In fact, I’ve been known to create an entire centerpiece out of fresh produce. You buy it anyway, so why not enjoy it in other ways too?

I only have one of these Lorraine Maroon plates, but I love mixing patterns in my decor any chance I get.

Simple Valentine’s Decor
Valentine’s decor doesn’t have to be complicated. Use what you have and get creative with your design elements. Simply adding the right holiday color to your decor can be enough to make it feel festive.
We use the coffee bar daily, but nothing feels overtly decorated (well, maybe the topiary). I’ve simply displayed everyday coffee items in an attractive way to create some joy in the mundane. How do you decorate for Valentine’s Day? Happy Nesting!
