If I could choose only one accessory to add to my home, I think it would be a mirror. Not because my name is Narcissus, but because mirrors are so incredibly impactful in your decorating. The purpose of mirrors goes way beyond being just place to look at yourself every morning. Let’s unpack some of the uses mirrors have in decorating, and why you should use them.
Decorating With Mirrors Adds Light
One of the biggest mistakes people make in decorating is not having enough light. There are specific types of lighting you need in each room, but mirrors are actually able to brighten a room as well. What good are beautiful furnishings if they are in the shadows?
One of my favorite tricks is to add a mirror on the opposite wall from a window. Light will bounce off the mirror and create the most beautiful effect. Probably the most famous example of this is in the Hall of Mirrors at Versailles. Of course, most of us will be using mirrors on a less grand scale, but the principle is the same.
Dark hallways and small vestibules are perfect places to add a mirror. This simple touch makes this tiny alcove feel special and intentional. The mirror draws you in to see what lies through the door.
Decorating With Mirrors Adds Layers
It’s important that your spaces have dimension, and mirrors are one of the best accessories for that. Reflections cast back at you add the illusion of depth and complexity, which are essential for interesting vignettes.
The most obvious way to accomplish this is by creating vignettes directly in front of a mirror, but don’t forget about mirrored accessories. Mirrored trays, picture frames, and mercury glass are all great ways to add light and complexity.
The mercury glass votive sitting on a silver charger mimics the mirrors on this buffet and creates the illusion of light.
Decorating With Mirrors Adds Function
We all have mirrors in the bathroom and bedroom, but there are other places you can add them for function and aesthetics.
Next to the bathroom, the foyer is the most important place to hang a mirror. Not only does it add light and depth, but it’s also practical for quick hair and makeup checks before you head out the door. Consider placing one by your back or garage door as well.
Mirrors Aren’t Just For Indoors
If you really want to add some interest to your home, put mirrors outside. People often forget to treat their outdoor areas as an extension of indoor spaces, which is a missed opportunity. Think of different outdoor areas you have, and brainstorm ways to make them feel more ‘indoor.’
Adding a mirror outdoors instantly creates magic. It can visually enlarge an area and it also reflects foliage and plants spectacularly. Even if you only have a small balcony patio, a mirror will instantly make it feel larger and brighter.
You can even add mirrors onto trees and trellises for a secret garden feel.
The Final Touch
So many times, simply adding a mirror to a room pulls it together for that ‘finished’ look. Take a walk around your home and think about areas that could use extra light, layers, or function. Happy nesting!
