Have you ever walked into a home that just felt….like home? I picture the March’s house from Little Women, Bilbo Baggins’s hobbit hole, or Anne’s dormer bedroom. Maybe it’s your grandmother’s house or your mom’s kitchen. People fill a home with love, but there are things you can do to make your home feel extra special, without spending hardly any money! Small details mean so much in a home. They are what create that homey feeling you get when you walk in the door. They take ‘okay’ decor and make it lovely. They take ‘boring’ and make it intersting. Here are a few unexpected ways you can elevate your decor – inexpensively!

Layered Lighting

Lighting sets the mood in a room. But the actual lights can make a visual impact too. Try adding lamps and sconces around your room. I aim to have at least 3 in every space. Sounds like alot, but boy does it elevate your decor. Try different combinations of table lamps, floor lamps, and wall sconces for a cozy vibe. Think about the colors, textures, and patterns on the lamp shades. Hang tassels or small ornaments from lamp switches for even more layered detailing. These small details create unexpected moments that add charm and interest to your decor.

Cabinet Skiffers

This may be a design element you haven’t heard of, but it’s a good one. Cabinet skiffers are basically decorative corner protectors. Kitchens are often overlooked when it comes to small details, but these are also practical because they keep your cabinet corners from scuffing.

Contrasting Trim

What’s up with all the boring white wall trim? Add personality and drama to your room by painting it an actual color. Even if its just a few shades darker than your wall color, contrasting trim is a small detail that invites you(and your guests) to really look at a room.

Door Hardware

This doorknob is unique and very reasonably priced.

Add charm and beauty to one of the things we thoughtlessly touch each day…your doorknobs. It’s simple to swap builder-grade boring for something with more personality.

Tassels are also a lovely little detail to add to a doorknob. In the past you either had to make your own or purchase them in a boutique, so I was surprised to see all the beautiful options Amazon has! I’m definitely going to have to add these to my collection soon.

Drapery Wands

Acrylic drapery wands add subtle elegance to your curtains.

Take your window treaments to the next level by attaching drapery wands to your curtains. Not only will it make opening and closing your curtains easier, it’ll also add a touch of luxury to your windows. Small details like this create a sense of ease and luxury to an otherwise thoughtless task. Plus, they will encourage you to open your windows more!

Small Details Combine For MORE

Small, thoughtful layers help create a real story in your home. On their own, they may not seem like much, but combined, they work together to delight your family and guests. I encourage you to slowly walk around your home and think of places you can add these small details for a little extra magic. Happy Nesting, y’all!
