Thrifted decor is having a major comeback, but I’ve always loved antiquing, or ‘junking’ as we call it in my family. It’s so fun to go out and see what treasures you can find.

Classic, timeless decor is really all about mixing old and new and high and low with layers and patina. You never have to worry about it going out of style – good pieces will stand the test of time. Here are my favorite accessories to look for at thrift stores for a beautifully curated home:

Silver Plate

Silver plated items(or even solid silver, if you can find it!) are timeless pieces that deserve a spot in your home. They are so versatile and can be used in any room. I collect silver platters, chaffing dishes, plates, bowls, and cups. You can usually find these at thrift stores for just a few dollars each.

I actually rarely polish mine because I like the speckled patina of tarnished silver. It drives my mom crazy, but that’s how I like it.

Blue And White China

Blue and white is a classic combo that I absolutely adore. In fact, our home is decorated almost entirely in varying shades of blue and its complementary colors. I wrote a post on creating a whole-home color scheme that isn’t overwhelming. You can find it here.

I can almost always find blue and white porcelain at thrift stores. It’s ubiquitous in antique stores, but it will be a bit more expensive. Here are a few ways I’ve used it in our home:

Books

I keep my eyes peeled for old books every time I go junking. They are incredibly versatile and can be used to decorate in so many different ways. Choose books that coordinate with your home’s color scheme and use them anywhere that could use a little height and color.

Tip: Check your library’s discard shelf for old books. You can often find large coffee table there too!

Brass

Vintage brass is one of my favorite things to look for at thrift stores. It adds so much warmth to your decor and will always be in style. Be on the lookout for lamps, candlesticks, trays, and figurines.

Baskets

Thrifted decor should definitely include baskets as a pretty and functional way to organize your home. They’re super easy to find and incredibly versatile. I always look at shape and function more than color – you can always paint your basket to better suit your decor.

Tip: Paint or stain thrifted baskets to better match your decor.

Longaberger baskets(remember them???) are a favorite of mine to collect. I love the texture they add and you can usually find them either online or in thrift stores.

Umbrella Stands

Umbrella stands are definitely on my ‘lookout’ list when thrifting. They are obviously useful by the front door, but can also be used in other ways, too.

As a plant stand:

Bamboo

Bamboo is a classic decor choice, and you can often find bamboo-inspired pieces at thrift stores for very little. Think chairs, picture frames, trays, shelves and tables.

Vases

Thrift stores are chock full of vases, and sometimes you can find some really great ones. Fresh flowers are a staple in gracious, timeless homes, so having a variety of vases is a must. Look for varying sizes and shapes so you always have the perfect vessel for flowers or branches.

I was lucky enough to find these woven lanterns(that I’m using as vases) 6 months apart at our local thrift store. Sometimes you have to be patient and keep checking the store for what you’re looking for.

Trays

LIke vases, trays are incredibly easy to find at thrift stores. Look for different shapes, colors, and materials to ensure you can style and use them in different ways.

Mirrors

Mirrors are another thrift store staple that add incredible light and depth to your home. I scored this gorgeous faux bamboo mirror for $5 years ago, and it has moved with us twice.

In fact, I love mirrors so much, I wrote an entire post about why every room needs one.

Thrifting is one of the best ways to add your unique touch to your home. Even though thrifted decor is often very inexpensive, it combines to create a home that looks rich and layered. Timeless homes aren’t built in a day – they take time and patience to curate. So go slow in your decorating. Visit thrift stores often to see if they have anything you love. Don’t rush good decor. It takes time, but is well worth the wait. Happy Nesting!
