There’s just something special and timeless about blue and white. It’s fresh, bold, and can be used with any decor style. But how can you use it throughout your home without it being overwhelming? Believe it or not, blue and white decor can actually act as a neutral – really! You just have to use it the right way. I’ll show you how you can incorporate this stunning combo into your decor in ways that can be bold or more subtle.
Blue And White Decor As A Focalpoint

The obvious way to use blue and white is to put it front and center. I’ve done this in my living room and breakfast nook. The rest of my home just has small touches that coordinate beautifully with the combo. My goal is to have a home that melds different colors and styles effortlessly. You don’t have to have a blue sofa for your home to ‘be’ blue and white though. Keep reading for more ways to incorporate blue touches throughout your home.

Blue And White Decor As An Accent

Though I love the combo, I didn’t want my entire house to be the same blue and white shade everywhere. That would just be boring! So how do you get blue and white to meld beautifully to create a cohesive home color scheme? Here are some tips:
- Chose finishes and furnishings that complement your chosen blue. This is especially important in open floorplan areas. For instance: our library looks into our living room, so I knew the bookcases would need to coordinate with the blue and white ginger jars over our entertainment center. I chose a beautiful set of deep teal bookcases for the space. The blue-green looks great with traditional blue and white decor and everything merges seamlessly. This variation in the color palette gives interest and depth to our home.

2. Use different shades of blue and white. The console in our library is more of a Robin’s Egg blue, rather than a bold cobalt blue like our living room. However, the color meshes beautifully with the bookcases AND bolder blues, depending on where it is used. This helps everything feel cohesive.

3. Add one blue and white piece to an arrangement or area. This can be as simple as a blue and white tea kettle on the stove, a tray filled with blue and white decorative balls, or a blue lamp or pillow. They give a little pop of color and pattern without overwhelming a space.

Even though we don’t have white kitchen cabinets – they are painted SW Shiitake, a pop of blue and white ties the kitchen in with our breakfast nook plate wall.

Incorporate Complementary Colors
Our bedroom is a great example of this. Though the walls are painted Halcyon Green, they still look great with a pop of blue thrown in. If you are unsure what colors to use, The Emily Rose Art School has a great color theory article that is super helpful.

Green, orange, red, and purple all look great with blues, so don’t be afraid of a bold combo! The orange tone of my rattan baskets is a nice foil to the blue and green decor.

Blue And White In Unexpected Places

Laundry rooms and outdoor spaces are often overlooked areas when decorating, but are both easy places to add a pop of blue – whatever shade you choose to use.
Our laundry room is a sweet space with blue-green cabinets. Tobacco Leaf plates on the wall add a nice multicolored pop of color with a nod to blue and white.

We chose deep blue outdoor chair cushions for our firepit area, and I love the bold statement they make.

Blue And White For Versatility
A blue and white combo is such a versatile pairing that can be used in any space. Even small touches add a layer of sophistication to your decor. Bold, subtle, traditional, or eclectic, blue and white has many uses. Wil you add a pop of blue into your decor? Happy Nesting!
