Our daughter just turned 13, and wanted a more ‘grown up’ bedroom for her birthday. Perfect! She’s an old soul who loves little details and vintage finds – truly a girl after my own heart. She created a Pinterest board for inspiration, and cottagecore was the direction we settled on. She wanted soft colors, lots of old pieces, and layered art. Oh, and a comfy reading chair. Her room turned out so sweet and fresh – just like her! Here are the details of her cottage bedroom:
Cottage Bedroom Color Scheme
Our daughter is drawn to muted neutrals and softer colors – very different than my more colorful style! She really wanted green doors and baseboards with white walls. I always love contrasting trim in a room, so thought it would be the perfect touch of color for an otherwise neutral room. We ultimately chose SW Softened Green for the trim and SW Creamy for the walls and ceiling.

Mixing Old And New
If you’ve ever read anything on this blog, you know I love mixing old and new pieces for a collected, comfortable look. We started with a vintage French provincial dresser and vanity that belonged to my great-aunt. They are lovely pieces with feminine details – perfect for a cottage bedroom.

Simple Cottagecore Bedding
Cottage decor often has lots of mixed patterns, but Miss 13 prefers a much simpler look. So, we kept the bedding super neutral with a solid cream comforter and then added a patterened quilt. We kept her daybed, since she uses the trundle for sleepovers. An olive green ruffled body pillow completes the look. The bedding isn’t fussy, making it simple for her to make(in theory – ha!).

The Reading Corner
Every cottage bedroom needs a spot to curl up with a good book! My mom found a vintage La-Z-boy armchair and ottoman at their church thrift store that was the perfect size, if not color. For a quick fix, I simply added a stretchy slipcover until I can have it reupholstered. A good fitting slipcover can really save a piece of furniture – give it a try before tossing an old piece!

Cottage Details
Small accessories really tell the story in this room. Almost all of them belonged either to family members or were found at antique stores. To me, cottage decor uses sweet, practical accessories that are lovely as displays, too.

Eclectic Art Gallery Walls
Because the tv had to go over the vanity, I wanted to try to dress the wall up a bit so it wasn’t so….tv-ey. This isn’t a fancy frame tv that looks like art – our girl’s only 13 and WE don’t even have one! So, I gathered my collection of vintage artwork, added in some of my mom’s paintings(more here), and then supplemented from good ‘ol Amazon.

Oh! Here’s a tip for you: order wallpaper samples on grasscloth, and frame them! You can get so many wonderful patterns to make your own art. Miss 13 happens to LOVE William Morris’s designs, so I simply purchased some WM-inspired wallpaper samples to frame. BOOM! Instant art!

A Room That Grows
The goal of this room was to give our daughter a room that can grow with her. Not too childish, but also still a bit playful. I think we nailed it! The best part is she loves it, and that’s all I really care about. What are your favorite cottage elements? Happy Nesting!
